Brittany Maynard was an American advocate for “right to die”. She was born in California and she graduated from psychology in 2006 from University of California, Berkeley. She was interested in travel a lot so she traveled many places all around the world such as, Vietnam, Nepal and Southeast Asian countries.
After a positive life, she was diagnosed with two-grade astrocytoma, which is a type of brain cancer. Then her cancer got worse in 2014 and her diagnosis was elevated to grade 4, which means that she had only six months to live. When she learned that situation, she decided to move to Oregon because she wanted to take advantage from Death with Dignity Law. She said that death with dignity would be better for both her and her family. Thus, she decided to end her life on November 1, 2014 via medications that doctor’s prescribed.
As you can guess her suicide decision was a controversial because some people supported her and thought that she is a beautiful, young woman. Thus, she is not a typical brain cancer patient so she became an admirable person. On the other hand, some terminal cancer patients sent her letter to consider her decision again. However, she never changed her decision and became a right to die activist. After her death, Vatican also condemned her because of suicide and they accused that she betrayed to people’s mission in the world.
Although she is death, her legacy is still continues. After she decided to end her life, she launched an online video campaign with Compassion and Choice. Also, she and her husband’s first duty were getting the legislation about right to die in California and it became reality on October 5. Besides that these tough years, her husband still try to sustain her legacy.
