What is a Metallic Bond?
A metallic bond is a chemical bond type. This bond connects the one or more atoms between the metals and based on the principle that free electrons in the lattice atoms are exchanged. This bond is one of the three most powerful bonds. The others are covalent and ionic bonds. A chemical bond is a force that holding the atoms in the molecules and the compound together. The ionic bond provides the electron exchange between metal and non-metal atoms while a covalent bond occurs between the non-metal-non-metal atoms and is formed by electron exchange.
What is the power of the Chemical Bonds?
A metallic bond is so different from the others; covalent and ionic bonds. Electron exchange is occurred between more than two atoms with this bond. Metal atoms contain a high number of electrons in their valance band relative to their period or energy levels in their outer orbits. These electrons separate from the atom and form an electron gas that surrounds the big lattice of a positive ion. The electrostatic attraction powers which occur between the negative electron gas and the positive nuclear enable the metal atoms to stay together. Here, there is no central bond as in a covalent and ionic bonds. The metal bond occurs between the positive ion mass and the electron gas which surrounds the mass. Metals usually have high boiling and melting points and this indicates that there is a strong bond between the atoms.
The Features of the Metal Bonds
The main difference of a metal bond is related to the electron exchange type; for example we can see at the covalent bond; that the electron exchange occurs between the just two atoms while at the metal bond, they are exchanged among the many atoms. Metal bonds are generally soft because these bonds have a feature which is called as delocalization. They have a good flexibility and due to this feature, the atoms can rearrange themselves easily and they don’t break the bonds. A metal piece can be malleable with a hammer because it will dent.
What about the Strength of a Metal Bond?
The covalent bond is found at least partially in the metal bond. However, the metal bond is not a covalent bond. Because, in a covalent bond; each atom has to make a bond by overlapping its orbital neighbour atom. Electrons which are in a metal bond cannot be held in such a place. Some physical properties of metals such as melting boiling points, evaporation heat, hardness etc. vary within wide fields. The metallic bond is strong or weak. If the ionization energy decreases, the metal bond strength also usually decreases. On the other side, we can say that as the number of the valence electrons and the core charge increases the metal bond strength increases. So, in parallel with the metallic bond strength increases, these properties also increase.
